I loved sports when I was growing. If I had to pick one, I'd say that I am a runner. Once I entered high school, I decided I didn't want to be the best at any particular sport but just really good at all of them. So I joined as many as I could: cross-country, soccer, track, basketball, baseball, and Soccer. My biggest athletic accomplishment would be getting into the sub 2:00 time on the 800m run in high school.
In 2004, I Joined the Navy and after some somewhat physically challenging training for aviation not much else was required. I moved to Hawaii in 2005 and spent the majority of my 20's expressing my love for beer and enjoying the local cuisine. Early 2009, I was in a bad shape and on the verge of being overweight. Cookie cutter "globo" gyms weren't my thing, so I picked up running again and started swimming to get a Red Cross lifeguard certification. About a year later, I withered down to about 6% body fat with little muscle mass.
After I found CrossFit in 2010, I had no doubt that the sport of fitness was definitely for me. I moved to Washington in 2013 and did an intro course at Crossfit Anacortes. The coaching was phenomenal, and the programming was difficult but rewarding.
The thing I like most about CrossFit is that it's the total package, and everything is completely scalable to anyone's skill level. It encompasses nutrition, strength, endurance, mobility, etc.. and everything is transferable to sports and everyday life. My advice would be to read the "What is Fitness?" article in the CrossFit Journal. I had been doing CrossFit for a little over 5 years before I read this and it does an excellent job of explaining the science behind everything we do.
